Choosing Low Cholesterol Foods

Many people complain, how difficult it is to control blood cholesterol. They have a strict diet, do not eat beef, goat, chicken, offal and eggs, and only eat vegetables and fruit only. But why cholesterol does not go down too? Is there something wrong with their bodies?
Cholesterol should always controlled at all times. Total cholesterol should be approximately close to 200 milligram percent (mg% subsequently written, Ed.). Usually, blood cholesterol levels between women and men is not really much different, both total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (low density lipoprotein cholesterol = bad). However, HDL cholesterol level (high density lipoprotein = good) cholesterol tended to be higher in women than in men.
Normal HDL in women is 55 mg% and HDL 45 mg% in men. With proper diet and regular exercise, the target is actually not too difficult to achieve.
However, in certain people, by doing a strict diet and regular exercise though, is not enough. Cholesterol levels in the blood remains high, before taking any medication given to a doctor. Genetic factors often cause the reduction of cholesterol is not so satisfactory.
This factor is partly due to the nature of hypercholesterolemia, ie people who have average cholesterol levels high enough, between 200-350 mg%. So those who suffer from hypercholesterolemia in a diet and exercise should be under medical supervision. Hypercholesterolemia does require more aggressive treatment. (more…)

Tips - How I Replaced Refined Sugar In Our House

One of the first things I did when I became interested in health was to get rid off all whites. I switched out the 'not so good' ingredients for healthier versions when I baked or cooked. White sugar was replaced with  un-refined natural sugar, and white rice and flour were replaced with whole grain versions. This was many years ago, and over the years have modified and got rid off even more things. Today I lean more towards a Paleo style diet, and when I use grains I prefer them sprouted. I allow my children to have a special treat day once a week, and they also enjoy extra treats during the holidays. We don't make a big fuzz about food when we visit people and we eat what's being served.

Change doesn't happen overnight. It is important to take baby steps so that you don't get overwhelmed. It is what you do everyday that counts, and it is not the end of the world if you occasionally enjoy food from the "banned list".  It may sound easy when I share things about health, but it has taken me a while to be the health person I am today.

To get you started I put together a list of ideas on how I have replaced sugar in our house over the years.

Here are some  ideas on how you can replace sugar in your baking and cooking.
  • Replace 1 cup sugar with:
    1 1/4 date sugar,
1 1/2 ground up raisins, dates or other dried fruit.
    1 1/2 cups molasses.
1 1/2 apple, black berry, or other fruit juice concentrate. (unsweetened of course)
1 1/2 cups brown rice syrup.

    What I do:

  • Pancakes/waffles: I mix a variety of berries with some water and let it simmer on the stove for a while. Add some pineapple chunks or little fruit juice if you need to sweeten it more. I store the left over in a glass bottle in the fridge. If you need to make it thicker, mix some arrow root powder with a tiny bit water. Add to the mixture at the end of the cooking time.
  • Yogurt flavors: I puree a mixture of berries and some fruit and I add it to natural unsweetened yogurt. Add some sweet fruits like banana or pineapple if your child thinks it is too sour.
  • I puree fruit, berries and sometimes coconut milk and put in popsicle molds. Leftover smoothies or protein shakes can be used the same way.
  • Hot cereal: I add frozen berries and let it cook with the cereal. This eliminates the need for any sweetener, often cinnamon is used as a topping when the cereal is done.
  • Dried fruit home made jam: First of all, rehydrate dried apples, pears, peaches or other combinations, with enough water to cover the fruit. Simmer until soft or soak overnight. Put in the blender and mix until it is smooth. It will keep about a week in the fridge. Add dried date granules if you want it sweeter.
  • Jam recipes:
*Dilute peanut butter with water and add crushed pineapple.
*Soak 1 cup dried apples and 1/2 dates in 3 cups water and then blend.
*Blend dried figs with desired amount of fresh orange juice.
*2 cups pitted prunes, 1 cup cashew nuts. Add water and blend.
*Blend almond and dates with equal amount of water.
*1 1/4 cup pitted dried prunes or 1 cup of pitted dates, 1 cup of dried apricots and 1/2 crushed unsweetened pineapple. Simmer prunes and apricots in enough water to cover fruit, or soak over night. Blend with pineapple in blender until smooth.

Sometimes when I bake I use Rapunzel's unrefined raw sugar. I also like to use crushed pineapple or dates when I make a special treat. I always have raw honey and maple syrup at home. I do realize it's effect on the blood sugar so I use it wisely.
I prefer to use more berries than fruit since many berries have a low glycemic index. They are truly superfoods with all their nutrients.

Don't be afraid to add a little extra rapunzel raw sugar ( it truly taste and smell yummy) until the family's taste buds are re-trained. It is still less sugar than store bought things. My children prefer that I add banana or pineappe to make it sweet, and it is enough as a sweetener.

Thanks for visiting!

Orthodontist - Braces or Not

Many people visit the dentist for a regular oral exam or teeth cleaning. But there are many people out there that suffer from malocclusion, or what is better known as a "bad bite". The most common treatment for crooked teeth is braces. An orthodontist is the dental professional who can administer braces.
There are a lot of people out there who suffer from malocclusion, in which their teeth are crooked and crowded. There are also some cases in which the upper and lower jaws may don't properly meet and even though the teeth appear straight, the bite is uneven. Teeth that aren't aligned properly can be caused from many things, including prematurely losing teeth, thumb sucking and genetics.
Crooked and crowded teeth make it harder to clean the mouth, leading to tooth decay, gum disease or tooth loss. That's why people should visit an orthodontist if they have teeth that aren't aligned properly. An orthodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of facial and dental irregularities. Orthodontics was the first recognized specialty field within dentistry. Many countries require different training for orthodontists, but generally a full time post-graduate study is required for someone to become an orthodontist.
An orthodontist will most likely prescribe braces, at an early age to create a nice looking smile and realign the teeth. Braces are brackets made of metal, plastic or ceramic. They can be clear or colored. There are different brackets that come in all shapes. Braces also have elastic orthodontic rubber bands, which come in all sorts of colors. Thanks to advances in dental medicine, there are now two types of braces. The fixed kind, which have to be worn all the time and can only be removed by an orthodontist, and the removable kind, which a person can take out of their mouth. Braces usually come with elastic bands that typically apply pressure to the hook, tightening the bracket and preventing the teeth to grow crookedly. The most common removable braces are Invisalign.
An orthodontist will take the mold of the teeth and patients will be able to remove the braces when they eat or brush their teeth. This can become a hassle and can be pricey, but most orthodontists approve. Most malocclusions become noticeable between the ages of 6 and 12, as the child's permanent teeth come in. An orthodontist usually treats malocclusions between the ages of 8 and 14, even though there are many adults who get braces when they are older. Some people refused braces as a child, so they got them at a later age. There are many dental problems such as overbites, underbites, crowded teeth, incorrect jaw positions and jaw joint disorders that can be treated as a child or as an adult. But, adult braces require a longer length of treatment because an adult's facial bones are no longer growing and can't be shaped as well as children. But it's never too late to see an orthodontist and improve your smile.
If you or your child suffers from crooked, crowded and misaligned teeth then don't hesitate to visit the orthodontist. Only an orthodontist can perform the correct dental procedures and prescribe braces.

Benefits of Flouride Toothpaste

Dental decay is a common oral hygiene problem but it can be easily prevented. There are many ways to prevent dental decay, but one of the most effective is brushing with fluoride toothpaste. Many people don't really know all the facts about fluoride toothpaste, how it helps prevent dental decay and why it can be a health hazard.
If you are curious about learning more about dental decay then you should learn the basics of fluoride. Fluoride is derived from Fluorine, the 13th most abundant element that is let into the environment naturally in both air and water. Fluoride is found in everything from water to soda to juices. Fluoride is also put into community drinking water through community water fluoridation.
This has been shown to help communities reduce dental decay for over 50 years. Fluoride helps prevent dental decay by maintaining saliva in the mouth and dental plaque is reduced. Fluoride toothpaste helps prevent dental decay by preventing bacteria in plaque to generate tooth-weakening acids and fluoride toothpaste also helps re-mineralize the teeth where the teeth-weakening acid has already started. Fluoride toothpaste has been used to control dental decay for 5 decades.
Fluoride toothpaste keeps the tooth enamel sturdy by thwarting the loss of crucial minerals from the enamel. But fluoride toothpaste can be harmful to children under the age of 6. Children usually swallow more toothpaste than necessary when brushing their teeth. They can develop enamel fluorosis if they ingest more fluoride than need. Enamel fluorosis is a discoloration of the tooth enamel. Half a tube of fluoride toothpaste can kill a child. This is why children should always be supervised when brushing their teeth. If the child is under the age of 2 then fluoride toothpaste should not be used to help brush the teeth. But fluoride shouldn't be ingested by adults in large amounts, either. There are many people who don't believe in using fluoride toothpaste and claim that it is very unhealthy for human consumption.
That's why there are organic fluoride toothpaste alternatives that don't use any fluoride. But, studies have shown that toothpastes containing fluoride, like Toms all natural toothpaste, are more effective against dental decay. These natural toothpastes also offer fluoride toothpaste as well. In order to maintain proper dental health people must use the right amount of fluoride dental products, along with visiting a dentist regularly. Even if you constantly brush your teeth, you must still see a dental professional. Only visiting the dentist can ensure good oral health. Dental decay is preventable and that is by following the proper oral hygiene procedures. Fluoride toothpaste is shown to lessen dental decay and help prevent it in the future. But be careful of using too much toothpaste, especially with younger children, because it can cause fluorosis.
There are many ways to prevent tooth decay but one is to use fluoride. The use of fluoride dental products and fluoridated water will help everyone maintain great oral health and keep more permanent teeth.

Dental Care - How To Keep Teeth Healthy

If it weren't for our teeth, we wouldn't be able to survive. Teeth allow us to tear and chew food and without them it would be hard to get by. This is why everyone should see a dental professional and receive a dental exam regularly.
Teeth are defined as one of the hard bodies that is usually attached in a row to every jaw, serving for the mastication and prehension of food, as weapons of defense or attack, etc., and in mammals usually composed mainly of dentin surrounding a susceptible pulp and covered on the crown with enamel. But most people just think of them as what makes up their unique smile. Teeth aren't only for show, and even though they are one of the strongest features in the human body, they must be taken care of.
Teeth consist of enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp. Enamel is the hard outer layer of the tooth that protects it. Dentin is the substance between the enamel and pulp chamber and is softer than enamel, therefore more prone to severe cavities. The cementum is basically the bony substance that covers the root of the tooth. And the pulp is the central part of the tooth filled with soft connective tissue, also called the root of the tooth. There are many dental problems that can arise including cavities, tooth decay, gum disease, sensitivity, and much more.
The most common dental problem is plaque, which leads to cavities. The mouth is full of bacteria, but when teeth are not cleaned properly the bacteria forms plaque that attacks the tooth enamel and causes cavities. Plaque is the most common dental issue and can be caused by foods, like sugars and starches, smoking, beverages, etc. But there is a way to prevent these dental problems and that is taking proper care of your teeth through brushing, flossing and visiting a dental professional regularly. One of the most popular dental products is fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride is an all natural element that is found in many things like the food we eat and the water we drink. Fluoride is used to strengthen the enamel of teeth and help prevent plaque build up. Brushing at least two times a day with fluoride toothpaste will help you prevent dental problems like cavities or gum disease. Also, flossing is important.
When we eat, food particles get stuck in between our teeth, even when we brush often. This is why you should floss and remove the food particles. If you don't, they can stay in between your teeth and cause cavities. Also, it is very important to regularly visit a dental professional. Dentists can evaluate, diagnose, prevent and treat dental diseases, conditions and disorders. There is no other person you can visit to receive the proper dental care that you need. When you visit a dentist for a dental exam they will usually perform a teeth cleaning.
Teeth are extremely important for humans and animals alike, but many people take them for granted. In order to protect your teeth and all around health, you should always take the proper care of them and visit a dental professional regularly. Your smile depends on it.
